Southwest Technology Center proudly recognizes Mark Nichols for his 29 years of dedicated service on the Board of Education, as his tenure comes to an end. Since joining the board in March 1995, Mark has been a cornerstone of leadership and vision, guiding the institution through nearly three decades of growth and success.
Born and raised in Altus, Oklahoma, Mark's commitment to the region extends far beyond education. As a farmer and rancher in Jackson County for over 25 years, he is president of Jess Mark Nichols Farms, Inc., N & K Farms, Inc., and a partner in the North Fork Cattle Company. His deep connection to agriculture and the community has influenced his leadership at Southwest Tech, ensuring that students are prepared for meaningful careers that benefit the local economy.
"Mark’s steadfast leadership has been instrumental in shaping Southwest Tech into the institution it is today. His commitment to students, faculty, and the entire Altus community will leave a lasting legacy," said Dale Latham, Southwest Tech Superintendent/CEO. "We are deeply grateful for his service and the incredible impact he has had over the years."
Mark’s long list of achievements speaks to his commitment to excellence. A graduate of Altus High School and Western Oklahoma State College, he earned an American Farmer Degree from Future Farmers of America in 1978 and has completed numerous leadership programs, including the Oklahoma Agriculture Leadership Program, Leadership Oklahoma, and the National Cotton Council’s Cotton Coalition Leadership Training Program.
Throughout his career, Mark has earned recognition at both the state and national levels. His honors include being named Oklahoma Jaycees Outstanding Farmer of the Year in 1984, receiving the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Military Airlift Command in 1992, and being selected as Jackson County’s Farm Family of the Year in 1993. His involvement with the military is also extensive, serving as an honorary commander for both the 306th Air Refueling Squadron and the 97th Services Squadron at Altus AFB.
In addition to his professional success, Mark has been a dedicated community leader. He has served on numerous boards, including Cotton Incorporated, the Oklahoma Water Resource Board, and the Oklahoma Cotton Oil Mill. His influence has extended far beyond agriculture, helping to shape public policy and community development throughout Jackson County and beyond.
"Mark has been a true champion for education and the local community. His vision and commitment to excellence have helped Southwest Tech flourish, and his legacy will continue to inspire future leaders," added Dale Latham, Southwest Tech Superintendent/CEO.
As Southwest Tech bids farewell to a remarkable leader, the Board of Education and the entire community thank Mark Nichols for his outstanding service and dedication. His contributions over the past 29 years have left a lasting mark, and his impact will be felt for many years to come.
