This week, Southwest Technology Center welcomed 6th graders from Blair, Duke, Granite, Hollis, Navajo, Mangum, and Olustee/Eldorado for an exciting STEAM Day focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. The annual event offered students the chance to explore various careers while participating in hands-on activities that ranged from medical science and civil engineering to aircraft maintenance and environmental science.
STEAM Day Highlights: Students experienced a wide variety of engaging, career-focused activities designed to spark curiosity and expand their horizons. The event introduced them to potential career paths they may never have considered or encountered before. By exposing students to these areas early, Southwest Tech aims to help them begin thinking critically about their education and career choices for the future.
Building Futures Through STEAM: “This annual event is the first opportunity for our Student Services division to engage with 6th graders as they start to grow, explore their interests, and think about their futures,” said Christie Rogers, Director of Student Services from Southwest Tech. “It’s so important to provide these students with experiences that help them make informed decisions about their education and career paths as they grow up.”
Southwest Tech’s outreach extends beyond STEAM Day. Each year, the school visits every 6th, 8th, and 10th grader in the district to help them prepare for their futures, ensuring that students are equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to succeed.
Special Thanks to Community Partners: Southwest Tech would like to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to Altus Air Force Base School Liaison Gwen Brakebill, whose efforts helped organize various areas of the base to participate in the event. Students were thrilled to learn from professionals who shared their expertise and passion.
A special shoutout also goes to the Altus Amateur Radio Group, who brought in fascinating equipment and shared their knowledge about Morse code and amateur radio. Their contribution added a unique and exciting element to the day.
