Southwest Technology Center's Construction Trades program offers students comprehensive training in constructing wood structures, basic electrical and plumbing skills, and the operation of professional hand, power, and pneumatic tools. The curriculum emphasizes interpreting and utilizing plans to build various structures, providing a solid foundation for those entering the construction industry.
A highlight of the program is the hands-on experience students gain by collaborating with master craftsmen in a shop environment. This practical approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared for real-world scenarios. Additionally, students have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications, including the OSHA 10-hour course completion card, which serves as an orientation to occupational safety and health for workers in the construction field.
Leading the program is Instructor Steve Forster, who was honored as Southwest Technology Center's November Employee of the Month. This recognition reflects his dedication to students and his commitment to sharing valuable industry experience in the classroom.
Currently, under Mr. Forster's guidance, students are engaged in an exciting project: building a tiny home. This initiative not only provides practical construction experience but also fosters creativity and innovation among students.
The Construction Trades program is open to both high school students and adults. High school students can enroll in a two-year program, attending sessions either from 8:00 to 10:50 AM or 12:00 to 2:50 PM. Adult students have the flexibility to choose between full-time (10 months) or part-time (2 years) schedules, with the same session options.
Graduates of the program can anticipate employment opportunities with construction crews, lumberyards, and other construction-related companies, thanks to Southwest Technology Center's partnerships with businesses and industries in the southwest Oklahoma area.
