Southwest Technology Center’s Metal Fabrication program offers students comprehensive training in essential welding techniques, including SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW. These skills are crucial for careers in construction, industrial sectors, and custom metalworking. Students learn to interpret blueprints, fabricate metal structures, and apply industry-standard welding practices, ensuring they graduate with the hands-on experience needed for a successful career.

Leading this dynamic program is Monte Brown, who joined Southwest Tech in 2022 as the Metal Fabrication instructor. With a career in the welding industry since 1998, Monte brings extensive experience, industry insight, and a passion for innovation to the classroom. As the owner of MLB Welding, he provides students with real-world applications of the skills they learn in class.

Monte is forward-thinking and continually enhances the curriculum by integrating the latest technologies and industry standards. He actively pursues funding to bring cutting-edge equipment into the program, most recently securing an American Welding Society (AWS) grant that provided the class with state-of-the-art Miller welders. This ensures students gain hands-on experience with the latest technology used in the field.

Additionally, Metal Fabrication students at Southwest Tech are well-equipped to stand for AWS certification exams, providing them with a competitive edge in the workforce. Monte’s commitment to high-quality instruction, workforce readiness, and industry alignment ensures graduates are prepared to excel in welding and fabrication careers.

Under Monte Brown’s leadership, the Metal Fabrication program at Southwest Tech continues to produce skilled professionals, meeting the demands of an ever-evolving industry.
